The upcoming full moon is in Aries which corresponds with the Major Arcana card The Emperor. Aries is ruled by the planet Mars which is linked to The Tower.
The Emperor (Aries) is the king of kings, or at least his superego would see himself as the absolute ruler. Emblematic of the power of this archetypal image is the god Zeus who himself becomes Emperor. King Minos also shares qualities of The Emperor. The Emperor is seated on his throne which is decorated with rams and presents himself as a powerful dictator. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and is the leader. The Emperor, like Aries, is powerful, authoritative, fiery, courageous and egotistical.
Also known as the Roman god of war, Mars (The Tower), is a planet with fiery, aggressive energy. It was the first planet to orbit outside of the Earth and this corresponds with Aries qualities of leadership and initiative. In traditional astrology, Mars symbolised lightning, a favorite weapon of Zeus (Jupiter). Mars is also a phallic symbol, signifying sexual drive. In The Tower card we see a phallic, lightning-struck tower, presumably a reference to the biblical story of the tower of Babel, where human arrogance was struck down by an angry god.
Mars is the planet of passion and sexuality and has the positive traits of having tremendous courage, energy and of putting plans into action. On a more negative note however, Mars governs forcefulness, aggression, egotism, strife and conflict, qualities of which we can also see in our Emperor. With The Emperor alongside The Tower the Tarot may be asking us to harness these qualities in a constructive rather than a destructive way.
The Tower card warns us that if we do not make necessary changes in our lives, then outside forces will make them for us. We need to free ourselves from our ego, destructive natures and false self-image otherwise it’s only a matter of time before we’ll call down the wrath of the gods upon ourselves.
